IT organizations have historically focused on standardizing, consolidating and outsourcing—essentially cost containing internal IT systems. Coming out of the economic recession of 2008 you had little choice but to focus here. During the past couple of years, more business leaders have started to realize that digital disruptions in their businesses are high. Across industries and regions, digital innovation is disrupting traditional businesses and
giving rise to a sweeping range of new capabilities, products, services, channels and competitors. A major challenge is that IT organizations aren’t historically configured to be an engine of creative innovation. We need to be able to advance innovation capability a lot more quickly. Tools can help, but it is really more about talent and organizational structures.

Security and privacy are both extremely important areas that need a lot of attention. Another tactical challenge is good data-driven advertising platforms.
We need better predictive analytics around advertising. Personalization, collaboration and digital convergence are three technology trends changing our lives. Some people refer to these trends as “social computing.” People want to be connected yet have the ability to turn this connection on and off at will.

People want technology that increases their efficiency and makes their lives easier and more enjoyable. People want what they want when they want it, and they are willing to pay for it. Our job is a lot harder today. We have to figure out how to solve these problems both internally and externally for our employees and our customers.
Personalization, collaboration and digital convergence are sub elements of the new digital economy, some would say revolution. The digital revolution is built on the cloud, social, data analytics and mobile disruptions. Change in these areas is having a profound impact on businesses. The change is disrupting enterprise business models and challenging established technology solution paradigms. In many respects the digital transformation is turning every business into a technology business. It is pulling technology into the core of the business–making it a real differentiator.
My Role as a CIO
The expectations of CIO roles have changed a lot over the years. We have made substantial progress in recent years to consolidate and mature just about all aspects of technology domains. But the pace of change has accelerated. We are in a digital economy that is disrupting old models and challenging established technology objectives. New attention is required to strategize and focus on digital solutions–that encompass people, processes and products–for our businesses.
Lessons Learned as CIO
I’ve been in my role at Cox for 12 years. That is a long time for a CIO. Time and tenure have a positive effect on influence, but the benefits of personal
relationships are important. You have to exhibit qualities such as trust, honesty and respect. Relationships are key to influence, and as they grow, so does your level of influence and impact in the organization.
